I think nearly every older adult today needs a glucose meter. This is one I can recommend.
I like this meter mainly because it is easy to use, reliable, and I think very affordable for what it does. The display is nice and easily readable. Mine came with 2 batteries (only 1 is needed), 100 testing strips and 100 lancets along with the automatic plunger. It also has a test solution to confirm the meter works correctly, and a zippered bag to keep everything together. The meter comes with software so you can upload the data to your computer, add notes, calculate averages, follow trends over time, etc. I use my meter and upload the data to my laptop every day. I then make adjustments in the foods I eat from my data log, and watch how I can reduce blood sugar spikes. There is something both satisfying and very educational about all of this. While I like the meter, there are a few issues that I don’t like about the software. First is that I cannot erase data points in the meter itself. If you are playing around with it when you first get it (like I was) and you now want to erase the bad data from the good data, you can’t do it (there is a way, but it involves resetting the meter). Now you can omit the bad data from entering into calculations in the software, but this is not the same as totally erasing the data. I just find it very annoying that I can’t erase obviously bad data easily from the meter itself, or go back and reassign test solution data that was accidentally marked as general data. A second issue I have is that the software is very limited in what it can do. You really can’t change any of the displays to perform custom calculations or make personalized plots of the data. I can move the data into another software package to do these things, but it is a hassle to do that. In any case, the software is free and it is helpful. But if you want more sophisticated analysis and graphing, you will need to use Excel or SPSS, or something similar. Most people will not need to analyze their blood glucose in such detail, but it is a shame the software is so limiting. I definitely recommend that you learn to use the free software to get the most from the meter.

    Works Great!
Works well, came with plenty of supplies. Easy to understand instructions and easy to read. It automatically saves values so no need to hit a button to get it to save. It is also easy to access those saved numbers for doctor visits. Plus it’s small size and nice case make traveling with it very easy as well.

No False readings or not enough blood supplied in sample
This is the very best meter I’ve ever used. I’ve never had a sample discarded for too small a sample size or any one of a number of other issues using other meters. No continuous recalibration requirements. Works very well, much better than expected.

Hard to get reading. User error
Update:Per pics that came with unit, looked as myself (and possibly many others) thought blood sample was to be placed on TOP of strip. After watching utube videos, tried placing front of test strip into blood sample. Works much better. Now gets reading every time.Still have not had chance to verify reading with lab tests, but now get consistent reading every time (and only have to use single strip per test)Original post:Calibrated ok. It’s hard to get a reading. Usually takes a couple of test strips B4 meter reads the sample. When I actually do get a sample to read, I have to question whether it’s valid. Tried to compare meter with real sample when giving blood. Unfortunately, that was one of the times the meter would not read the sample on the strip.

Great (ignore-Awful) Quality Control: Correction, I was wrong, read below.
Correction: My apologies to the company. I got a different, good monitor, and it gave me the same high value. long story, I had added collagen peptides to my morning coffee, not thinking it could affect my glucose that much. Please ignore the description below. This is a great monitor.I do like this device a lot other than the accuracy. Imagine you buy a new car and take it to the highway where there’s a 75 MPH speed limit. You are doing 75 and the police stop you for speeding at 105. I took my old monitor to my annual blood test and tested it immediately after the blood extraction, and there was a small difference (5?) in the results. Unfortunately, I can no longer get test strips for my old monitor. After at least 12 hs fasting, my reading is 85 – 100. I tested the new monitor vs the old one a couple days ago, and the results were 88 for the old one, vs 123 for the new one. Ridiculous difference. I tested the new monitor with the control solution, and it showed 158, right at the upper limit. Not worth for me trying to contact seller. The only explanation for the good reviews it has is that they have awful quality control, and I got a bad one.

    Low Cost but High Quality
I have Tricare insurance, but my share of cost for Freestyle Lite strips was more than this whole kit. Plus. the refill strips are extremely affordable. This has a big, bright display and quick reading. The trickiest part is setting the date and time. There is a SET button on the back where the AAA battery goes, and so once I found that, it was easy. It takes 6 seconds to get a reading. The lancet pen is the best! The readings are accurate as far as I know – nothing unusual in my my numbers compared to what they’ve normally been.

    Great product and great price!
I had a unit that I used when I had gestational diabetes and could no longer get the testing strips. With diabetes being in my family and me wanting to watch my numbers, I decided to purchase this. It was less expensive then the kits at my local stores and works great.

    Difficult to use so far.
I have tried for two days using three fingers each day. So far I have not been able to get a reading. There is a baseline vial for testing and it works, so I know the unit works. You need a large drop of blood and it has to be placed exactly in the right place on the test strip. I will keep trying until I get it to work.
