Are you totally stressed out, overwhelmed, or completely burnt out caring for a loved one? Are you feeling alone, isolated, or wish you had more help? Are you feeling resentful or guilty?

If this is you, keep reading.

While there are rewards to caring for those we love, there is no denying being a caregiver is a stressful job.

It’s physically demanding, mentally exhausting, and emotionally draining.

The responsibility wears us thin as we become a shadow of who we once were.

In 2020 it was estimated there were approximately 53 million caregivers in the United States alone, with up to 70% reporting symptoms of depression. With our ever-growing aging population, the lack of caregiver support, and the growing demands in our evolving personal lives, this number is likely only going up.

Even the most well-prepared and organized can’t escape the strain and burden that come along with caregiving.

Having felt all this and more, Katie Duncan, a nurse practitioner, Death Coach, and former family caregiver, reveals the secrets she learned throughout her own caregiving experiences, and the shared wisdom of other caregivers she’s encountered along her path.

It takes a very special person to be a caregiver, and you are one of them. You deserve to find your peace, your joy, and yourself again.

A fun, heart-warming read with practical applications for just about everyone!
This book is exceptionally well-written. As a young mom to a 9 month old and a previous healthcare worker for autistic children, I’m all too familiar with caregiver burnout. In my career, I felt pressured to constantly be perfect for my kiddos, and as a mother, sometimes it feels like I have no sense of self. It can get really physically and mentally difficult being the only person responsible for every part of my baby’s well being.Enter this book. What I love about the author is she inserted her own personal experiences as not just a nurse but a caregiver for loved ones herself, and she starts every chapter with an inspirational quote related to the tips she offers. Both these personal stories and inspirational quotes make each tip hit home for the reader. Additionally, the content is organized really well with easily digestible tips and practical applications. Some of the tips are things you probably hear all the time, but when you read what she has to say about each tip, you realize that they’re more important than you previously thought. Other tips are things I never would’ve considered; one of my favorites was her chapter on reframing your mindset around being a caregiver.I would highly recommend this book to anyone finding themself in a caregiver position, whether you’re a mother to a baby or disabled child, caring for an elderly family member, working as a therapist, nurse, doctor, etc. This is the kind of book that you would love to read in bed a little bit at a time after a long day taking care of everyone except for you.

Helped me manage my stress overload
I’m a caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. This book has helped me tremendously to manage my stress. I often think I don’t have time for self-care, or at least that’s what I always tell myself. If it’s not “time” it’s that I have zero energy left in my tank. Sometimes I find myself so tired physically and mentally that I feel like I can’t keep this going. This book was written so thoughtfully. The author has a warm, caring voice. She has given me the motivation to shift the way I go about each day and even the way I look at caregiving for my loved one. She gave me useful tools to keep myself more organized, which has actually allowed me a bit more time for me. I’ve never really made myself a priority while caregiving, nor did I believe it was possible. I actually laughed at the idea of self care. But since reading this book I’ve learned that I can. I’ve noticed I show up a little lighter, and I think maybe even a little happier with myself, my loved one and even others. Thankful for these gentle reminders.

Good information- leans toward end of life caregiving
I enjoyed this well written, easy to follow helpful guide. But, I felt it’s geared more toward providing end of life care to a loved one. Although, I was looking for help with day to day caring for a loved one with a chronic illness at this point not end of life – it was useful and worth reading.

    Finding Joy Again
Thank you for this book!! I’ve been caring for a loved one who is now in the end stages of dementia on hospice. It’s been a long road. There have been a lot of ups and downs. There have been many ways I wanted to give up. This book has given me a little bit of hope and encouragement to keep going. I find the tips the author gives are practical, useful, helpful reminders, and gentle on my now worn caregiver spirit. She made me laugh. I actually thoroughly enjoyed her Tip and Strategy on Finding Laughter again. It’s been a long time since I’ve laughed, I’ve realized. I had a good laugh with my loved one and it actually brought me to tears. Thanks again. Highly recommend this book for a caregiver, especially if you’ve been a caregiver for a long time.

    A MUST READ FOR CAREGIVERS
As someone who lived with my grandfather towards the end of his life and a fellow nurse practitioner I could not say enough about this book. It is so easy to get lost in caring for those you love and forget about yourself. This book was straightforward and easy to read but the tips Katie provides are invaluable.

Excellent Resource for Current & Future Caregivers
This book is a great resource for all current and future caregivers to keep close by. Even reading a few quick tips each day helps remind those in caregiving roles that it’s imperative to maintain a healthy lifestyle and head space. We hope to see more from this author!

Helping Me Find Myself Again WHILE Caregiving
Got this book to help me manage my caregiver stress. In some ways I thought reading a book like this would only add to my stress, but in other ways I knew it was something I had to do, or else….I imagine most of you other caregivers contemplating this book are thinking what I thought – I don’t have time for this, this is pointless, I’m too busy, no one gets what I’m going through. This was me, too. All I can say is I’m really glad something in me told me to read this book. I took it in small doses, like the author advised. Sometimes I would silently say, yeah yeah yeah I’ve heard that before. But at the same time, somehow hearing the author’s voice in my head made me re-think the advice I’d usually get annoyed at. So I’d keep reading, and then come across a tip that would hit me deeply. Something I’d never thought about or heard of before. Her strategies for each tip are simple and tactful. Getting out of bed every morning is easier now. And for me, I’d say that’s a change. Trying to re-think my life and my situation. I recommend this book- it’s easy to read, simple to follow, funny at times, silly at times, and feels like an old friend giving you a little encouraging nudge. Thank you!!

It feels like this book was written for me and to me. From the start of the book the author has me feeling like she knows exactly what I’m going through. It’s as if she’s relating to my exact thoughts. She gets my stress, my resentment toward my loved one for whom I care for, and the guilt I hold for wanting to actually have a life again. Many of the tips in this book are simple, but quite honestly their good reminders. Other tips I found quite interesting, things I would have never thought of or considered. I’m particularly appreciative of her tip on flexibility. She honestly helped me reflect on how I’ve been reacting to unexpected events – which of course is out of anyone’s control. I have a habit of really spiraling down a negative cycle of thoughts but she gave me some needed insight into the power that “being flexible” really has. Definitely thankful for this book. If you’re a caregiver of any sorts, this is an easy, interesting, and heart-felt read that might just inspire you like it did for me.

This book felt like kind advice from a friend, who enables you to allow yourself a break. As someone who struggles to justify ‘me’ time away from looking after another, I could see the sense in the advice given. The author has a warm and caring ‘voice’, as well as practical tips. Would highly recommend!
